Facts About Germs and Bacteria

There are germs in your house all the time. In the right conditions, some bacteria can divide every 20 minutes. There are loads of different types of germs and some will stick to you. Your immune system keeps you safe from any harm but some germs can mutate into things your body doesn’t recognise. These are viruses. Just keeping clean can reduce the risk of getting a virus.

The kitchen is a major place for germs to spread. Obviously. We all clean the sink out after washing up but other problems occur later. Things that get overlooked. Moist towels that get used repeatedly and what about handles. I don’t just mean the handles on utensils. What about the handle on the fridge or freezer? What about door handles. Germs spread so easily and just opening the fridge after touching raw meat can spread bacteria at the drop of a hat. When you think about door handles, you’re now thinking about light switches aren’t you? Well, if you weren’t, you are now.

Right ladies, how’s that make-up bag of yours? How often do you use the things in there. How often do you touch your hands and face with what’s in your bag and when was the last time you cleaned your make-up bag? All those microorganisms in the bristles of all your brushes. Nice.

What about laundry? What about the laundry? Just leaving wet laundry for a short amount of time can cause bacteria and germs go grow.

OK, here’s something to think about. How often is the toilet seat cleaned? Quite often. Rightly so. Now what about your mobile phone? What about your television remote control? Your computer? Your keys? These things get touched far more than your toilet seat don’t they? They get touched by everyone around you. Everyone around you. People who may not have clean hands. Now think about that.

Keeping a Clean Workplace

About 20 years ago, an old friend of mine got the job of manager of a prestigious shop on King Street in Manchester. At the time, King Street was the place to be. There was no Trafford Centre at the time, only Manchester city centre and King Street was the centre of opulence. The pinnacle of North West shopping. Footballers were becoming very highly paid and actors and business alike wanted the best. It was post Thatcherism but her ideals hadn’t just vanished. People still wanted more. This was the 1990s and the 1990s Manchester was different. Tony Wilson once said “But this is Manchester, we do things differently round here.” He wasn’t wrong.

Door Handle

My old friend walked into his new shop on his first day and did something none of his new staff expected. He dismissed the shop floor, walked down the stairs and straight to the basement. What was in the basement? The stockroom? Yes. The Office? Yes. The staff kitchen? Also yes. And that’s where he headed. He walked into the kitchen. A largish room with uncovered brick walls and red painted stone floor, a table and some old chairs, oh and the fridge. How could I forget the fridge, that’s where it all starts. He headed straight for the fridge. Opened it and took everything out and placed everything neatly on the table. He then proceeded to clean the fridge, which by the the way, was a dreadful mess. He then cleans off the bottles and cans and other things and placed them back in. Everyone thought he was mad but when he explained his theory, it all started to come together. “I’m starting here.” he said. “I’m starting with you.”

His theory was this, make your place of work, somewhere where your staff want to come each day. After he cleaned the fridge he mopped the floor, wiped the table down and then started on the toilet. “People from head office will come down every so often but I’ll work with you every day and I want you to want to come to work.” He spent most of the day cleaning.

He started with what was important. He started with his staff, not the product. Look after your staff and the product will look after itself.

In a study at The University of Warwick in 2014/15 it was found that happy staff were more productive by 12% while unhappy staff were less productive by 10%. Human happiness has a large effect on productivity and invigorate us.

A clean office can affect a business in so many ways. Health is so important. Absenteeism costs the British economy somewhere in the region of between 10 and 32 billion pounds per year. If a workspace is untidy, it shows a lack of care. Employees who see this start to adopt this lack of care and eventually see it as, well nobody else cares, why should I?

A study in America by HLW International found that a clean office produced a 5% gain in productivity and the removal of dirt and dust had health gains within the workforce too. Also exposure to dusty carpets can lead to a reduction in productivity by between 2% and 8%, so imagine if your staff work in an unclean environment and are unhappy in their work. Who’d be happy going to work in a mess? As opposed to a clean, fresh environment?
